Hunting FAQ

Q. What is the terrain like in our area?

A.    This is thick country, starting at 3,900 feet and going up in elevation to about 6,800 feet. The area is mountainous, with steep trails going up and down. You potentially will be crossing fallen trees and rocks. It’s best to be in shape for this hunt.

Q. What is the expected hike?

A.    On a typical hunt, you can expect to hike 6-8 miles daily. Depending on where the guide takes you. It could be less.

Q. What is the expected ride for a backcountry hunt on horses?

A. you can expect to ride for 3-6 hours on a pack-in hunt. Generally, you can expect around a 12-mile ride on trails.

Q. What is the expected shot distance?

A.    A rifle shot distance is normally around 300 yards. Archery is around 30 yards.

Q. What is the typical success rate?

A. Each season is different; however, our average success rate year after year seems to be around 50%.

Q. How many hunters are in a group?

A. There are 2 hunters to 1 guide—4 max in camp. If you want to upgrade to a 1 on 1, then it is you and the guide.

Q. Do you handle the licensing and tag process?

A.    For the licensing, we have you go onto the Idaho Fish and Game website to obtain your nonresident license. You can try to get one of the tags from the Idaho Fish and Game in December. If you are unsuccessful, we have allotted outfitter tags for you to purchase.

Q. What are the accommodations?

A.    Accommodations are canvas tents with wood floors and wood stoves. Our cook provides all the meals--breakfast, sack lunch, and dinner. You are welcome to bring any snacks or drinks that you really enjoy. We do not provide alcohol. You are welcome to bring some spirits, but you will not be allowed to do this until after your hunt. Under no circumstances are you allowed to hunt if you have been drinking or with a hangover!

Q. How will the transportation/meet-up time take place?

A.    We would like you to come a day before your hunt dates. You will either book a room in St. Regis, MT, or Avery, ID, depending on the type of hunt you booked and if the pass leading to camp is open. The weather on the pass is a huge factor. We always let you know ahead of time where you will stay. We recommend you drive a 4x4 in the bear and elk seasons, as the snow could be there in May, and it’s usually there in October.

Q. What are your safety protocols?

A. We have Starlink and radios in camp for emergencies and communication. There is no cell service in camp. We also have safety meetings before we take you out, and we can call a local helicopter service to fly you out if there’s an extreme emergency.

Q. Should I buy Travel Insurance?

A. Yes! We highly recommend travel insurance in case of unexpected road closures, extreme weather (mostly snow or extreme rain with flooding), injuries to guides or staff, fires, trail closures, etc. We also recommend Life Flight Insurance if you would ever need to be flown out due to health or an injury. Flight insurance costs around $99 a year, but if you don’t have it and need to fly out, it will cost you around $10,000.

Q. What is your Refund Policy/Cancellation Policy?

A. There is no refund by Bitterroot Mountain Outfitters, Inc. or the Idaho Fish and Game.  Hunters must understand there is a chance you may not see an animal due to unforeseen circumstances. Once a Deposit is made, it is nonrefundable. If you need to cancel, we can push your hunt for 1 year only, and your deposit can go towards that. If we need to cancel, your hunt will be pushed to the next year due to unforeseen circumstances. We do not give refunds for unforeseen weather, acts of God, closed trails, or roads. We strongly advise each hunter to buy trip insurance.

Q.  What are your Terms of Service?

A. We require 25% due at booking. 25% due 30 days later. The balance will be due 60 days before your hunt. If we do not receive your final payment on or before the due date, your hunt will be canceled, and you will not receive a refund. There is no refund once your final payment has been accepted. We accept credit cards (w/a 3.5% fee added), or you can send a check.
