Spring bear hunting in the Panhandle of Idaho is one of our favorite times of year. The snow is melting, and the sun is shining. The bears are soon to come out of their long winter's nap. And when they come out, they are hungry! This means that they will be looking for food and lots of it. We start placing bait out a few weeks before bringing in any hunters. We do this to ensure that bears are on the baits when our hunters arrive.
We will send out a schedule for each hunter, confirming your hunt dates and where, when, and place we will meet you. Weather permitting, we will meet in St. Regis, Montana. You will need to come in the night before your hunt. You will want to book a room ahead of time at the Super 8 Motel. We will meet you at noon the next day. If you have driven to St. Regis, you will follow me or one of our guides up to camp in your rig.
If you fly in, we will arrange your pick-up in St. Regis, and you can ride with us. The drive is about an hour to base camp. Once there, our guides and cook will meet you and welcome you into camp.
After a brief safety meeting, you will unload your gear into one of our wall tents. After this point, we will take you up in a truck or side by side to one of our many bear baits. We will walk you into the bait site, where you will stay until dark. Once you shoot a bear, you will contact us on one of our radios, and we will come up and pull your bear out.
After your bear is harvested, you will need to tag it and then take it to Superior, MT, to get the bear sealed. We will give you directions on how to get there.
Once that is done, we will skin your bear. It will be stored in an ice chest until you are done hunting. We then wrap it up so you can transport it home.
In Idaho, we are a 2-bear area. Once you shoot your first bear, you can shoot a second one for an upcharge/fee. However, the second bear is up to the Outfitter’s discretion. We want everyone to have a chance at their first one. So, it depends on the number of bears seen and how the other hunters are doing.
Our outfitting business wants every hunter to be successful in their hunt. Please make sure your rifle/bow is properly sighted in. We do have a policy in place that if you shoot an animal and it bleeds, this is your animal. If we cannot find the bear, then your hunt is over. As stated above, if you wish to try for a second bear, you will be charged $900. This fee will need to be paid in advance. This same policy is in place for the second bear as well.
